Windows 10 Leak Reveals Cortana Search Bar, Updated Apps

Microsoft has already shown the groundwork for Windows 10 on the Developer Preview, the new start menu, build in metro-apps on desktop and various interfaces for power users show a gradual move to one OS design for all types of users. The second event for Windows 10 is scheduled for January 21, but the big announcements may have already been leaked online, in a new ‘Build 9901’, cited as the Windows 10 consumer edition preview.
Released a few days ago, the main features on the new preview include Cortana, an new Xbox app and various updates to the interface.

Starting with the Cortana search menu, Microsoft is essentially importing all data from Windows Phone or starting from scratch on Windows 10. Cortana will be a virtual assistant and offer information about the weather, local places, general information and tap into other third party apps for updates.

On Windows 10, Cortana is located on the task-bar, either in a search button or search box (depending on preference). The task-bar has been updated with a new shadow design, taking a dark color from the current theme.
The next big change on Windows 10 is the Xbox app. Right now, it just looks like a place to check the Xbox news feed from friends, but advertisements of exclusive Xbox One games hint at PC cross-platform support.
Having exclusive Xbox One games on PC would be a nice idea, but the catch may be only gamers with the Xbox One game can download it for PC. It is still unclear what Microsoft is attempting to do with Xbox.
Microsoft has built in a contact support app, allowing users to potential screen share their problems with a member of staff. There is a new startup guide for Windows 10, which hints at users being able to make phone calls on Windows 10.
The leak shows all of the visual updates to the apps on desktop mode, giving them a Metro redesign. Microsoft still has not announced availability or price, this information will most likely come on the January event.

The Best Alternative Browsers

We recently discovered what you, the TechBeat readers, prefer to use when it comes to browsers, however we noticed that some of you commented on how you have chosen alternative browsers over the mainstream ones like Firefox, Chrome and Internet Explorer. So if you are looking for a change and want something a bit different, why not try one of these alternative browsers.

Comodo IceDragon

Comodo IceDragon is a Firefox-based browser that offers a high level of security for those who are particularly concerned about malware and phishing websites. One of the main reasons for this is because you can route web browsing through Comodo's own DNS servers, which the company claims are faster and more secure. Checks are performed on SSL digital certificates and you are given reports on how strong a secure website really is. At the same time an on-demand site inspector checks for malicious code. It features a virtual browsing mode so that it can run completely separate from the rest of your system, therefore ensuring that malware cannot infect your PC. It looks and feels just like Firefox but with added security, however if you prefer the Chrome framework then you have the option of using Comodo Dragon, which is specifically for Chromium based browsing.

Maxthon Cloud Browser

Maxthon Cloud Browser is renowned for its numerous extra features but like most browsers still synchronizes all bookmarks, options, tabs, address bars and new tab links across all your PCs and mobile devices running Maxthon. The Cloud Download enables you to download files directly to the cloud so that they don't clog up your local machine. They are then available from any device. Other handy extra features include MagicFill - a mulit-account password manager, Snap - a screen capture tool and SkyNote - this will save text that is then made available to all your devices running Maxthon. If you love having lots of functionality and the ability to synchronize across all your machines then Maxthon is the ideal alternative browser for you.

Avant Browser

Avant is an alternative browser for those of you who want a Microsoft-based engine but don't really like Internet Explorer. As a browser it is fairly fast, comes pre-loaded with twenty four skins and features tabbed browsing and modular toolbars. You can save personal data so that your bookmarks and form content are accessible from any machine, so handy if you like to synchronize your content. Avant provides you with automatic updates, a password manager and an integral Internet Explorer search engine. Although it may not be the most secure browser out there, it does protect you against pop-ups and malware but not phishing websites.

Divide Numbers in Excel

We know how to divide, by paper. Or, we can just try to solve the problem using the calculator. Now, can you divide in Excel? Well, multiplication is the opposite of division, and it does not mean you enter =PRODUCT(number1-number2). So, what is the formula? How do I do it? Well, let's see below.

Steps

  1. Divide Numbers in Excel Step 1.jpg

    Open Excel 2007 or 2010.
  2. Divide Numbers in Excel Step 2.jpg

    On any cell, type =QUOTIENT(numerator,denominator).
    • Replace numerator and denominator with the numbers you want to divide.
  3. Divide Numbers in Excel Step 3.jpg

On the right of that cell, type =QUOTIENT(numerator, denominator) again.
    • Replace numerator and denominator with 2 numbers.
  4. Divide Numbers in Excel Step 4.jpg

Now, on the right of the second cell, type the formula again. This time, type the two cells that you want to divide.
  5. Divide Numbers in Excel Intro.jpg

    Finished.

Google Now Helps You Get Your Shopping Done

Google Now has a new purpose: reminding you to spend money. With the latest update to Google Search, Android users will soon begin receiving notifications when nearby retailers carry an item they've recently searched for online. If you've queried Google about a new pair of hiking boots or a toy for your kid, don't be surprised if those items automatically appear in a Google Now card — assuming a nearby store actually carries them. If so, you'll see the products, their prices, and the stores where you can find them show up in a card meant to "remind you that you wanted them," Google says. It's not clear how many products Google keeps track of at any one time, nor how long it will hang onto items and check if you can buy them locally.
Unfortunately, even if it finds a match, Google Now can't tell you whether an item is in stock at a given retailer; you'll still need to call or go in to confirm availability. Like other cards, you can turn off tracking via Google Now's settings. (That might be a good idea if you often share your phone and want to avoid gift spoilers, for instance.) Google has been busy improving its personal assistant of late. In recent weeks, the company has added offline support and introduced a helpful feature that remembers where you parked your car.

Tips For Browsing With Chrome

Chrome, the powerful browser from Google, is full of features and with the right know-how it can speed up your browsing experience. In this article we are going to look at some of Chrome’s features that can be used on a desktop PC, tablet or smartphone.

Google Voice Search

Google Voice Search can be accessed from anywhere in Chrome. From a smartphone, tap the address bar followed by the X and then tap on the microphone icon that appear. Alternatively, on a tablet you can just tap the microphone icon which is located on the address bar.
You can either say keywords, a web address or ask a question and your search results will come back to you.

Preloading and Bandwidth Reductions

If you only have a limited amount of mobile data, reducing bandwith is really important. The preloading feature is a default setting that is only enabled to work on Wi-Fi and means that Chrome will automatically fetch a web page that it discerns you will load next. This will help prevent you from wasting your mobile data.
By enabling the Reduce Data Usage feature, you can also reduce your bandwidth. This setting will cause web pages to be routed through Google’s servers and compress, therefore saving that bandwidth.
If you are using an Android device then tap the menu button, followed by settings and then select Bandwidth management. If you are using an Apple device, then tap menu and settings, then select Bandwidth.

Request Desktop Site

If you want to use the desktop version of Chrome on your smartphone or tablet, then all you need to do is tap the menu button and select Request Desktop Site.

Quick Menu Option

This feature only applies to Android devices and enables you to select a menu option in one simple step.
Touch the menu button, move your finger downwards until it is over the menu option you require and then lift your finger off the screen. Simple!

Tab and Data Sync

If you log in with a Google account, Chrome will sync all your open tabs and browser data between your devices, which is great if you use the browser on your desktop, smartphone and tablet.
Chrome data and tab sync
To view open tabs, tap the menu button and select “Other devices”. Or you can also go to Chrome’s new tab page and select “Other devices”, which is locaed at the bottom right corner of the page.

Swipe Between Tabs

Chrome allows you to use swipe gestures so that you can switch between open tabs. Unfortunately this feature doesn’t work with Android tablets; only Android phones, the iPhone and iPad.
To use the feature on an Apple device, place your finger at the edge of the screen and swipe inwards to move between the open tabs.
To use it on an Android phone, swipe your finger left or right from anywhere on Chrome’s toolbar.

Hopefully you will find these suggestions useful. As always, if you have any tips, share them with us in the comments below.
