Microsoft has already shown the groundwork for Windows 10 on the
Developer Preview, the new start menu, build in metro-apps on desktop
and various interfaces for power users show a gradual move to one OS
design for all types of users. The second event for Windows 10 is
scheduled for January 21,
but the big announcements may have already been leaked online, in a new
‘Build 9901’, cited as the Windows 10 consumer edition preview.
Released a few days ago, the main features on the new preview include
Cortana, an new Xbox app and various updates to the interface.
Starting with the Cortana search menu, Microsoft is essentially
importing all data from Windows Phone or starting from scratch on
Windows 10. Cortana will be a virtual assistant and offer information
about the weather, local places, general information and tap into other
third party apps for updates.
On Windows 10, Cortana is located on the task-bar, either in a search
button or search box (depending on preference). The task-bar has been
updated with a new shadow design, taking a dark color from the current
theme.
The next big change on Windows 10 is the Xbox app. Right now, it just
looks like a place to check the Xbox news feed from friends, but
advertisements of exclusive Xbox One games hint at PC cross-platform
support.
Having exclusive Xbox One games on PC would be a nice idea, but the
catch may be only gamers with the Xbox One game can download it for PC.
It is still unclear what Microsoft is attempting to do with Xbox.
Microsoft has built in a contact support app, allowing users to
potential screen share their problems with a member of staff. There is a
new startup guide for Windows 10, which hints at users being able to
make phone calls on Windows 10.
The leak shows all of the visual updates to the apps on desktop mode,
giving them a Metro redesign. Microsoft still has not announced
availability or price, this information will most likely come on the
January event.

The Best Alternative Browsers
We recently discovered what you, the TechBeat readers, prefer to use when it comes to browsers, however we noticed that some of you commented on how you have chosen alternative browsers over the mainstream ones like Firefox, Chrome
and Internet Explorer. So if you are looking for a change and want
something a bit different, why not try one of these alternative
browsers.
Comodo IceDragon
Comodo IceDragon is a Firefox-based browser that offers a
high level of security for those who are particularly concerned about
malware and phishing websites. One of the main reasons for this is
because you can route web browsing through Comodo's own DNS servers,
which the company claims are faster and more secure. Checks are
performed on SSL digital certificates and you are given reports on how
strong a secure website really is. At the same time an on-demand site
inspector checks for malicious code.
It features a virtual browsing mode so that it can run completely
separate from the rest of your system, therefore ensuring that malware
cannot infect your PC. It looks and feels just like Firefox but with
added security, however if you prefer the Chrome framework then you have
the option of using Comodo Dragon, which is specifically for Chromium
based browsing.

Maxthon Cloud Browser
Maxthon Cloud Browser is renowned for its numerous extra
features but like most browsers still synchronizes all bookmarks,
options, tabs, address bars and new tab links across all your PCs and
mobile devices running Maxthon. The Cloud Download enables you to
download files directly to the cloud so that they don't clog up your
local machine. They are then available from any device. Other handy
extra features include MagicFill - a mulit-account password manager,
Snap - a screen capture tool and SkyNote - this will save text that is
then made available to all your devices running Maxthon.
If you love having lots of functionality and the ability to synchronize
across all your machines then Maxthon is the ideal alternative browser
for you.
Avant Browser
Avant is an alternative browser for those of you who
want a Microsoft-based engine but don't really like Internet Explorer.
As a browser it is fairly fast, comes pre-loaded with twenty four skins
and features tabbed browsing and modular toolbars. You can save personal
data so that your bookmarks and form content are accessible from any
machine, so handy if you like to synchronize your content.
Avant provides you with automatic updates, a password manager and an
integral Internet Explorer search engine. Although it may not be the
most secure browser out there, it does protect you against pop-ups and
malware but not phishing websites.

Could You Live Without Your Smartphone? Probably Not.
It sure didn’t take very long before smartphones came into the world
and started to dominate our lives. Even sitting here thinking now, I
can’t think of very many people I know who don’t own a smartphone. I can
still remember when the very first iPhone was released and can’t
believe how much has changed in the (relatively) few years since then.
But just how important our cell phones in our lives? Well, if a survey
from Bank of America has anything to say about it, they’re pretty
important – some would say they’re almost the most important thing in
our lives – and that’s a little scary.
The above mentioned survey by Bank of America revealed that a whopping 47% of U.S. smartphone users said they couldn’t go a day without their beloved phone. Wow. One day? Come on U.S. – there’s a physical world outside of your digital one. That particular statistic may not be the most telling one, though, especially among the younger folks surveyed.
Are You Addicted To Your Smartphone?
When the survey asked those aged 18-24 how important their phones were to them, they said they were more important than their toothbrush and their deodorant. Seriously. When our technology becomes more important than our own hygiene, it sounds like there’s a problem somewhere down the line – especially when these results come from the youngest people surveyed. It makes one wonder what the results will be in 10 years. Maybe there’ll be a toothbrush and deodorant app then, who knows.
Do you know someone who can’t last a day without their phone? What do you think these results tell us about our society? Let us know your thoughts regarding this story in the comments section below.

Hackers Take Control Of Israel Army Twitter Account
The Israeli news website Ynet has posted a screen shot of what they say was a tweet that confirms that the Israeli Army Twitter account was hacked.
“#WARNING: Possible nuclear leak in the region after 2 rockets hit Dimona nuclear facility”
The army told AFP, that “several incorrect tweets were posted” on its English spokesperson’s account @IDFspokesperson late on Thursday night. This information suggested the account had been “compromised.”
The account then posted an apology to its followers and had erased the hackers’ false messages come Friday morning.
The Internet hacking group, Syrian Electronic Army, claimed responsibility for the hack; posting a screen shot of the army’s Twitter page with at least two of its fake tweets.
The other tweet read “Always via @Official_SEA16 Long live #Palestine” linking directly to the SEA’s official account.
The hack came as Israel’s army was giving regular updates on some rocket fire from Gaza that was hitting southern Israel. This was apparently after cross-border exchanges, which included retaliatory air strikes by Israel. Israeli warplanes crushed targets inside Gaza on Thursday this week and militants had fired at least 34 rockets into Israel, the army said.
Israel had warned Hamas on Thursday to put a stop to rocket fire from its Gaza power base and sent army reinforcements into the Palestinian area.
As always, if you would like to leave a sensible comment, then please do so in the comments section below.

PC Gaming is Becoming More Popular Than Console Gaming
How do you like to game? Are you solely a console person? Maybe you
prefer the Xbox One or the PlayStation 4? Or, maybe you’re still hooked
to the Xbox 360 or the PS3. Or, maybe you don’t like consoles at all and
you depend on your PC to take care of all of your gaming needs. If you
find yourself in the latter category, you’re definitely not alone – and
your group is getting bigger and bigger every day. According to a recent video gaming survey compiled by DealNews, it seems PC gaming is now more popular than console gaming.
I’ll admit – when I was younger and couldn’t afford buying an expensive video game system, I’d play games on my PC. Admittedly, not many high-end games would work on my low-end computer, but it was still fun for a kid. And now, it seems, the tables have turned – consoles are cheaper and high-end gaming computers are now more expensive. One thing has stayed the same, though – whatever the mode, people still love to play video games, and some for far longer than others. Have a look below at some of the results DealNews found in their survey:
What do you think of these statistics? Please let us know your comments regarding this story in the comments section below!

Facebook Manipulates News Feeds For Emotional Experiments
It shouldn’t surprise anyone by now that Facebook performs all kinds of experiments with their user’s information. For
a week in 2012, though (January 11th-18th to be precise) they undertook
a massive experiment with the News Feeds of 689,003 Facebook users.
They wanted to see how their users responded to overwhelmingly positive
stories vs. overwhelmingly negative stories. So here’s what they did:
on some of those 689,003 News Feeds, they posted only positive stories;
on the rest of the News Feeds, they only posted negative stories.
Through this experiment, they found that those who received the positive stories posted more positively. (Imagine that)! And the reverse was also true: those who got all the bad news posted a lot more negative status updates. (It’s easy to complain about everything in your life when everyone on Facebook is doing the same thing).
You Never Know Just What Facebook Might Be Up To…
What did you think Facebook did with all of your status updates after they were replaced with newer ones? I’ll admit I never gave much thought to it, but I never imagined they’d be involved in an online psychological experiment without my knowledge. If you can remember feeling really happy or terribly depressed because of Facebook back in 2012, this experiment might be the culprit. After all, one can only handle so many negative things in a row without wanting to throw their computer out the window or deleting the app from their phone. (The latter might be the more mature option of the two, though it is also the less fun option).
What do you think about this? Does it surprise you? Does it anger you? Does it make you want to quit Facebook for good? Let us know your thoughts regarding this story in the comments section below!

Factory Resetting Android Phones May Not Erase All Data
If you’re anything like me, you’ve probably took to sites like eBay
or Craigslist to get rid of your used cell phones. And why not? Who
wants to keep a drawer full of old phones when there’s some money to be
made from them? All you have to do is take a casual look around eBay and
Craigslist (among other sites) and you’ll see there is a huge market
for old and used cell phones. But when money talks, it’s sometimes easy
to forget to do important things before you offload your phone onto
someone else, specifically getting rid of all of the personal data on
the phone.
Since we now use our phones to do just about everything, including mobile banking, it’s more important than ever to wipe your phone of any personal information before selling it to anyone. And while many Android users have used the factory reset option included in their settings options to do just that, it may not have worked all that well. Oh, it looks like it works on the surface and at first glance, but deep down much of your personal information is still visible to someone who knows how to find it.
Just Because You Can’t See It Doesn’t Mean Someone Else Can’t…
Security software company Avast recently bought 20 used Android phones off of eBay to do a little testing of their own regarding how thorough the factory reset option is, and their findings aren’t all that encouraging. Using some basic available software, Avast found thousands of pictures (including many embarrassing nude selfies), contacts, texts, loan applications, etc. They say while the factory reset button looks appealing, it really only deletes all of the phone’s application information, and not necessarily all of the user’s personal information. So be careful before you think about selling that old Android phone!
Of course Avast has a mobile app which they claim will wipe away your data in ways the factory reset option cannot.
What do you think? Let us know your thoughts regarding this story in the comments section below!

How To Fix Your Broken iPhone Display
Apple
builds their flagship devices with great care and makes them able to
withstand a lot of wear and tear. But people do treat them like they are
made of an indestructible material and throw them around a bit, which
of course they aren’t and so the occasional cracked display will arise.
There are many tech-heads, which make it their job to tear down beautiful devices, such as the iPhone 5 and see just what makes them tick. Take the guys over at iFixit for instance, they have very nicely supplied a guide to replacing the screen, if you feel like you are up for the challenge, that is.
The technical writer, Andrew Optimus Goldberg, claims this (warranty-voiding) repair for the iPhone 5 is, in fact, reasonably easy to do.
To undertake this repair, you are going to need a few things. First of all you will have to buy a new display assembly. You can purchase these online, just look on the web, and maybe check out eBay. Additionally, you will need a 3.6 millimetre five point (Pentalobe) screwdriver, a Phillips #00 screwdriver, a small suction cup and a plastic prising tool.
Ok, now you have your kit laid out on a nice big, flat table with lots of room to work, open the iPhone’s case. You do this by removing the two five-pointed screws between the speakers on the bottom of the phone. Press the suction cup onto the glass, close to the home button, and pull upwards. Next, insert the prising tool in the crack you have just made. You now need to keep pulling and detach the clips, which hold the screen on and then work your way up to the top, but be careful not to open the assembly fully.
Now you want to remove three screws located at the top-right corner and use a small Phillips screwdriver to detach the small, silver metal bracket holding to logic board. There are three cables, which need to be removed from here. You can use the prising tool to remove them. Now you can fully remove the panel assembly.
You now need to disassemble the front panel. This is done by removing the earpiece bracket and the speaker. Look for the camera sensor cable and remove the camera and rear microphone as one unit. Now take the screws off the home button bracket and lift the ribbon cable off the touch panel assembly. Now remove the bracket and the ribbon cable and prise the home button loose.
Once you have accomplished these tasks you can remove the aluminium plate that covers most of the back of the display assembly and then transfer the working parts that you have just removed from your old panel and put them into the new one. All you need to do now is completed the procedure in reverse! Don’t panic, everything should fit back into the same places. Just ensure that all the connections are reattached accordingly.

Underground Stations To Give World Cup Scores
World Cup fever is ramping up. Whether you love the game or hate it, there is no getting away from it. The 2014 FIFA World Cup
is here. There are going to many ways to catch the latest goal action
and no doubt you will be seeing the latest football scores plastered all
over the place. But I bet you weren’t expecting to see them on your
regular and routine commute to the office, now were you?
There is going to be no escaping the World Cup at all this summer, even on your way to work! When travelling on the London underground, or the Tube as it is known locally, you will be able to see the latest scores on your platform as you wait for your train to the office.
To supplement the existing network of Virgin Media’s WiFi hotspots, which will allow you check scores on your smartphone, ESPN have linked up with Transport for London to bring scrolling results, score updates and news to platform screens and entrances in more than 140 different stations.
ESPN is said to have provided around £100,000 for the privilege of this media outlet and will kick off things on June 12th, when host country Brazil meet Croatia and then the action will continue until July 14th, the day after the World Cup final is played.
What do you think? Is it a good idea to convey this information to everyone as they wait for the train to and from work? As always, if you would like to leave a sensible comment, then please do so in the comments section below.

How To Keep Your Children Safe Online
The Internet is a place filled with so much knowledge and
entertainment, that you would not be able to come close to seeing even
half of it in your lifetime. Everybody should have access to this
wonderful tool of information, from young ones to older ones alike. A
massive amount of the information available is obviously not age
appropriate for younger ones. How do you keep your children safe online?
With the advent of Internet enabled devices, such as tablets, smartphones and media players that provide a variety of activities and education opportunities for young people, just how important is it to be aware of what these devices are capable of? How you can communicate with your child to assist them in using this technology in both a safe and a positive manner?
Basically it comes down to 3 steps for parents to follow:
1. Understand the capabilities of the technology the child is using. Most, if not all of the devices used today can access the Internet.
2. Understand the possible risks of different online activities and how you as a parent can support your child to be safe online. Such as the ins and outs of social networking, i.e. not meeting up with people they have only met online.
3. Talk with your child about using their device safely and responsibly and agree a set of boundaries, like what websites it is ok and not ok to visit.
There are lots of different things to consider when allowing your child to have access to the Internet. How do I ensure the web content my child sees is appropriate? How can access filtering protocols on my home network? What are Apps? What is social networking? How does Facebook work? What can I do to find out more about Cyber-bullying? How can my child access music, films and TV using their device? What should I do if my child has seen something inappropriate? And so on and so forth.
It all comes down to common sense; you need to work out logically all of the questions you need answers to and then locate that information, before you make your decisions about what to do. Do some research folks!
The following information and websites will give you a good start on where to find information that will be helpful to you as a parent:
For practical advice for keeping your child safe online the NSPCC website is very informative. For parental resources and a myriad of information about keeping your child safe online, Stay Safe Online is a good place to look. Another similar website with lots of information is ikeepsafe.
If you do come across some illegal content, such as images of child abuse, you can report this to the Internet Watch Foundation in the UK or elsewhere in the world at InHope. If you suspect that your child has been the subject of an inappropriate sexual contact you should report this to Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre in the UK, and internationally at the virtual global taskforce.
I hope this quick guide has given you a little insight into how to keep your child safe online.

VLC Media Player 2.1.3 (32-bit) free download
VLC Media Player is the most popular and robust multi format, free media player available. The open source media player was publically released in 2001 by non-profit organization VideoLAN Project. VLC Media Player quickly became very popular thanks to its versatile multi-format playback capabilities. It was aided by compatibility and codec issues which rendered competitor media players like QuickTime, Windows and Real Media Player useless to many popular video and music file formats. The easy, basic UI and huge array of customization options have enforced VLC Media Player’s position at the top of the free media players.
Flexibility
VLC plays almost any video or music file format you can find. At its launch this was a revolution compared to the default media players most people were using that often crashed or displayed “codecs missing” error messages when trying to play media files. VLC can play MPEG, AVI, RMBV, FLV, QuickTime, WMV, MP4 and a shed load of other media file formats. For a full list of compatible file formats please click here. Not only can VLC Media Player handle loads of different formats, VLC can also playback partial or incomplete media files so you can preview downloads before they finish.
Easy to Use
VLC’s UI is definitely a case of function over beauty. The basic look does however make the player extremely easy to use. Simply drag and drop files to play or open them using files and folders then use the classic media navigation buttons to play, pause, stop, skip, edit playback speed, change the volume, brightness, etc. A huge variety of skins and customization options mean the standard appearance shouldn’t be enough to prevent you choosing VLC as your default media player.
Advanced Options
Don’t let VLC Media Player’s simple interface fool you, within the playback, audio, video, tools and view tabs are a huge variety of player options. You can play with synchronization settings including a graphic equalizer with multiple pre-sets, overlays, special effects, AtmoLight video effects, audio spatializer and customizable range compression settings. You can even add subtitles to videos by adding the SRT file to the video’s folder.
Summary
VLC Media Player is quite simply the most versatile, stable and high quality free media player available. It has rightly dominated the free media player market for over 10 years now and looks like it may for another 10 years thanks to the constant development and improvement by VideoLAN Org.

How to Turn Your Smartphone into A WiFi Hotspot
if you are like me and use the Internet on a daily basis, then you
need a good strong reliable connection. But what if you are out and
about with your laptop/tablet and there is no WiFi connection? How do
you get online? Don’t panic, as no doubt you will have your phone with
you. The standard mobile phone contract that most people receive with
their handset comprises of Talk-time, SMS allowance and Data. It is
this data allowance and the ability to connect to either a 3G or 4G
network that is going to help get you online when no WiFi is available.
You can set up your smartphone as a WiFi hotspot quite easily. The ability to do this is available on ‘most’ contracted phones. That goes for if you are using an Android phone, an iPhone, a Windows smartphone or a BlackBerry.
All you need to do is look into the settings on your particular device, then set up tethering/personal hotspot. Once this has been done, then just pair and connect your laptop (or other device) to that connection. Got it? No. Then allow me to break things down for you.
If you are using an iPhone, just look for Personal Hotspot in your settings while Android users can find a Tethering or Portable Hotspot in their settings. Windows smartphones use the feature, Internet Sharing. BlackBerry has a Mobile Hotspot Connections option in the network settings.
For the purpose of explanation, I’ll use a connection with an iPhone to elaborate on, but in reality all the basics are pretty much the same. Once your device is in the wi-fi hotspot mode it will then create a network, which can be seen in the list of available networks by the wireless device you’re trying to connect, i.e. your laptop.
iPhone: Settings, Cellular, Personal Hotspot, if Bluetooth isn’t on, iPhone will inform you that Personal Hotspot will only be available over WiFi and USB. It will then ask you if you also want to enable it over Bluetooth as well. You need to connect via Bluetooth or USB cable, as you are not near a WiFi signal. Once you agree to turn on Bluetooth, Personal Hotspot is now discoverable. iPhone will ask you to provide a password of 8 characters. Once you have done this you will now be able to connect with your iPhone, as it will be visible as a network from your laptop. All you need to do is find the network that your phone is called and provide the password you have just created and then connect to the network and use the 3G/4G signal to connect to the Internet. It really is that simple. *Note: If you are an Android user, after you select your phone in this list you will be asked for a password if you have set up password protection. This password will be generated by the smartphone in the hotspot settings.
There are notable advantages and disadvantages to using tethering. The advantages are; It’s convenient and you can use your smartphone anywhere you have a cellular connection. And you can take advantage of the speeds 4G provide, if you have a 4G contract.
The disadvantages are; tethering a device to your smartphone drains your battery a lot faster. There is a risk that you might exceed your monthly data allowance limit if you are not careful. If you have poor signal on your smartphone you will have a poor data signal too.
So there you have it, a quick guide to connecting another device to your smartphone and using it as an Internet connection.
As always, if you would like to leave a sensible comment regarding this how to, then please do so in the comments section below.

How to Follow the FIFA World Cup
In June 2014, Brazil will host the 2014 World Cup. 32 teams will play
each other for the FIFA World Cup trophy and title. Although more than
three million people will attend World Cup matches, most people will
follow the World Cup via TV, online or through clubs and sports bars.
Method 1 of 3: Following the World Cup on TV
-
1Go online to find out what stations will be broadcasting the FIFA World Cup in your country. You can find a listing of stations at www.ipaddressguide.org/watch-fifa-world-cup-2014-online. In the United States, games will be broadcast on ABC, ESPN and Univision.Ad
-
2Ensure you have cable TV access during the World Cup. Games will be aired between June 12 and July 13, but it is recommended that you sign up for TV by June to ensure access.
- Only 10 games, including the final, will be broadcast on ABC in the United States, which may not require a cable subscription. The schedules are available on the ESPN website.[1]
-
3Sign up for a Digital Video Recorder (DVR) system if you want to watch all of the World Cup games. Occasionally, World Cup games are broadcast concurrently so that the outcomes cannot be tampered with during group qualifying matches. Recording them will allow you to watch them right after they are broadcast.
-
4Call your local sports bars. Ask who will be broadcasting World Cup games and which ones they plan to broadcast. Large sports bars often have enough TVs to allow at least one to be dedicated to the World Cup between June and July.
- If you like watching soccer games in a bar, you can save money by watching some games on Network television and others at a sports bar. You may want to compare costs of drinks and food at a bar to what a cable subscription will cost.
Method 2 of 3: Following the World Cup Online
-
1Go to FIFA.com. The website for the Federation Internationale de Football Association is the most visited sports website in the world. Go to FIFA.com/worldcup/ to find the latest news stories, bracket information and more.
-
2Download the FIFA app on your smartphone or tablet. It is available on Android and Apple phones. It includes the World Match Centre with information on past, current and future matches.[2]
-
3Follow the World Cup on Twitter. The Twitterverse is excited to be keeping track of games, wins and losses online. Follow accounts like Fox Soccer News, BBC World Cup, AP World Cup, 2014 FIFA World Cup and FIFA World Cup.
- Individual hashtags for teams, games and world cup moments will be used, so follow trending topics to find new hashtags to use and follow.
-
4Check online one week before the World Cup to find links to online match streaming. Streaming the match online may involve using a pirated version of the broadcast and it is likely to cut in and out of availability.[3]
Method 3 of 3: Following the World Cup Via Bracket
-
1Print out a bracket in order to follow World Cup bracket movement at home. You can find a printable bracket at http://www.printyourbrackets.com/images/world-cup.pdf. FIFA also sells a 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil wall chart for $15.
-
2Sign up for a World Cup league. ESPN and other websites allow you and your friends to choose who will win the brackets in advance.
-
3Fill in the team winners through the group round, round of 16, quarterfinals, semi-finals and championship matches.
